Foods for diabetics: Diabetes is a problem which many people face today. They have to be extremely careful with the kinds of foods they eat as if the correct foods aren’t consumed; it could have an adverse effect on their diabetic level. It is estimated that around 26 million people in America suffer from diabetes and most are seen to be of the ages of 60 and above. There are simple ways on bringing the blood sugar level under control and if one adheres to them, there is no reason as to why diabetes has to be a major problem. A proper diet, exercise and medication (if required) are seen to be enough in countering diabetes and keeping the level of blood sugar low.

There are two kinds of diabetes namely Type 1 and Type 2. The ADA- American Diabetes Association has provided a list of 10 foods which are suitable for people with diabetes to have. There are certain nutrients which are required to be consumed by people who have diabetes and these consist of magnesium, calcium, Vitamins A, C, E and potassium. Foods high in fiber are also suggested which can help people with diabetes feel full in terms of their hunger and also help in keeping the glycemic index low which would not allow the level of blood sugar to rise. It would also help in keeping the cholesterol and blood pressure at a minimum, something which is very important for diabetics. Beans: All kinds of beans are rich in a variety of nutrients as well as fiber. These will help keep the cholesterol low and the blood sugar level steady which is a must for diabetics

Fruits: Citrus fruits such as oranges, grapefruits and those which contain Vitamin C in them are perfect for diabetics. The fiber which is in these fruits will help in slowing down sugar absorption and at the same time, the person having the fruit will be able to derive its nutrients

Green vegetables: green and leafy vegetables are low in carbohydrates, calories and are dense in terms of their nutrients. These are again perfect for any diabetic to eat and there is no such thing as too much vegetables for a diabetic

Sweet potatoes: these are high in fiber and vitamin A and low in their glycemic index which will prevent the blood sugar to raise

Berries: all kinds of berries are filled with fiber, vitamins and antioxidants which are perfect for a diabetic to have

These are only some of the foods that are appropriate for a diabetic to eat. If adhered to the list, there is no reason why diabetes should be a problem. It would also be a good idea to consult your physician regarding diabetes and what foods would be appropriate to have along with what exercise to do.
